A trained energy economist, his openness has led him to use concepts from other disciplines. This has allowed more than once to pioneering work in Germany and in other countries, like the bottom up energy analysis, using technical and microeconomic and even market research concepts, hybrid technological-statistical scenario techniques in energy forecasting, combining technological, economic and political science concepts in energy policy advisory, taking into account the cultural background of the respective country and even the microcosms of rural energy in development cooperation. He even left his energy comfort zone to develop concepts for urban waste management, for managing indirect land use change impacts and also disaster risk and climate change adaptation of development projects.
